If I could bottle the essence of a single day in our life,
I think I’d bottle today, and here I’ll tell you why.
Today was nothing special, an every day, you know?
But the sun was bright, the sky was blue, and the wind was not too cold.
I’ve struggled with this longing for things we do not have,
For places we have not seen and things we do not own.
And I’ve selfishly spread those struggles on to you,
Just one more thing for your shoulders to hold.
And then today when I asked to ride, though you were playing games,
You smiled and rose and quickly were ready to go.
You smiled and teased and asked which direction we should head,
And turned the bike down the road like it would never get old.
If I could bottled the essence of a single day in our life,
I think I’d bottle today, and here I’ll tell you why.
Today was nothing unique, an every day, you know?
But the sun was high, the sky was blue, and the wind was not too cold.
We traveled down a well-worn road, to a place we’ve been before,
Without complaint, though you knew there were no twisting, curving roads.
And from the warmth of sun and you, slowly I grew warm,
Until I felt my heart take flight, as with you it always does.
You reached back and patted my leg as it rested against your side,
Somehow possessive, yet gentle and loving and kind.
And I couldn’t help but hug you tightly, clinging to your back,
In that moment silently I heard “I am yours and you are mine.”
If I could bottle the essence of a single day in our life,
I think I’d bottle today, and here I’ll tell you why.
Today was nothing uncommon, an every day, you know?
But the sun was bright, the sky was blue, and the wind was not too cold.
Freedom and beauty and love and joy, often are only ideals to some,
But riding with you, my love, they are so much more.
They are real and vibrant and hard, universal truths,
And in these moments so bright, their meanings are pure.
I would ride with you forever with the sun on our backs and road before,
I’d follow every road and face every adventure on the way.
And know when we laugh with joy that all is right in my world,
That I can face what may not come, and of course, what may.
If I could bottle the essence of a single day in our life,
I think I’d bottle today, and here, I’ll tell you why.
Today was nothing rare, an every day, you know?
But the sun was high, the sky was blue, and the wind was not too cold.
